Micro Crystal AG, a company of Swatch Group Inc. of Switzerland, was founded in 1978 in Grenchen, Switzerland, as a manufacturer of camertone crystals for watches. Today, Micro Crystal AG is a leading manufacturer of miniature quartz crystals (30 kHz to 250 MHz), real-time clock (RTC) modules, oscillators and OCXOs for the world's leading manufacturers of IoT, wearable, automotive, industrial and medical applications. Most of the company's products are AEC-Q200 qualified. Micro Crystal's manufacturing facilities are certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and IATF 16949; meeting all social and environmental regulations.
The Internet of Things opens up a wealth of new applications and generates a demand for more functions to monitor or control. Unfortunately, this is often associated with increased energy consumption. This is the starting point for a systematic check of energy demand. Different function blocks consume specific maximum currents. Fortunately, not all functions have to run at full capacity all the time. The aim is to switch off everything that is not needed at any given time. A device that always remains on must consume ultra-low power. Why not consider a real-time clock (RTC) module if it is on anyway?
Modern RTC modules consume as little as 60 nA during full operation. Such an RTC tracks the time of day and has the ability to periodically switch on the system controller to see if any action is required. It has been proven that it is often possible to reduce the total current demand by more than 90%.
Real-Time Clock (RTC) Modules combine a 32.768 kHz XTAL with a CMOS based oscillator and RTC IC inside a miniature SMD ceramic package.
